In MS, the immune system mistakenly attacks myelin, the protective sheath that surrounds nerve fibres. This damage disrupts the normal transmission of nerve signals between the brain and the rest of the body. The resulting scarring or plaques on the nerve fibres give the disease its name: multiple sclerosis, meaning “multiple scars.”
Symptoms can come and go in attacks (relapses) or worsen progressively over time, depending on the form of MS.
